Video intercoms

The Dahua 2-wire intercom field guide

Dahua's 2-wire IP intercoms fit a modern video intercom to an entrance that only has two wires. They work brilliantly once configured — but the manuals describe each device on its own, never give the commissioning order, and hide the one setting everybody asks for. This is the manual we wished we'd had.

What this covers

Every failure we hit on a real villa deployment — the DHI-VTO3222E-P door station, the VTH1550CHW-2-S1 indoor monitor and the VTNS2003B-2 2-wire switch — the root cause of each, and the fix that worked. It is written for installers, electricians and locksmiths. Part 6 is a friendly hand-over for the person who lives there.

The finished job: a Dahua DHI-VTO3222E-P door station on the gate pillar. Tap the fob, the gate releases. Our own footage.

The five things the manuals don't spell out

  1. The two wires carry power and data together.
  2. The "hub" has no IP address and will never show in a scan.
  3. The door station and monitor must be on one subnet; the door station is the SIP server and the monitor registers to it.
  4. Basic intercom needs no internet — only the phone app does.
  5. The door code lives on the door station's web interface, not on the monitor and not in the app.

In this series

Part 1

Dahua 2-wire intercom setup: the field-tested procedure and seven failure modes

The commissioning order the Dahua manuals leave out — for the VTO3222E-P door station, VTH1550CHW-2 monitor and VTNS2003B-2 switch — plus the seven failure modes we hit and each fix.

Part 2

“Network abnormal” on a Dahua indoor monitor: what it really means, and the two-minute fix

A Dahua VTH indoor monitor says “Failed to monitor. The network is abnormal.” What that message actually means, why it keeps coming back, and the fix — from a field technician.

Part 3

How to set the door code (PIN) on a Dahua VTO — and why the app can't do it

You can't set a Dahua gate code from the indoor monitor or the DMSS app. Exactly where the keypad PIN lives on a VTO door station and how to set it, step by step.

Part 4

Dahua 2-wire anatomy: what the VTNS2003B-2 “hub” actually does

The Dahua VTNS2003B-2 “hub” has no IP address. It is a power-line switch that bridges two wires to Ethernet — how it fits together and why it never shows up in a scan.

Part 5

Dahua RPC2 API: configuring a VTH indoor monitor that has no web UI

Some Dahua VTH indoor monitors have no browser UI. How to log in and configure one remotely with the RPC2 JSON-RPC API, including the two-stage digest login and a working helper.

Part 6

The Dahua intercom app (DMSS): the easy resident setup

The right app for a Dahua villa intercom is DMSS, not DMSS VDP. A simple resident-friendly setup so a gate call rings the phone and unlocks in three taps.

Part 7

Dahua 2-wire intercom commissioning checklist and handover pack

A printable commissioning checklist, acceptance test and handover pack for Dahua 2-wire IP intercoms — so nothing is missed and the client gets a documented handover.
